Concering Cortana and the MC...
I have been reading the thread concerning Cortana and I had some thoughts concerning her and the MC that I wanted to throw out there
1) We do not know the exact orders that Cortana was given by Dr. Halsey upon her creation. Similar to the original RoboCop movie, she could have been given some orders that the MC is unaware of. MC questioned her orders, and was satisfied with the answer, that Cortana has the same orders as him, but what if she had more that just those orders. What if Cortana has interpreted the orders differently and has seen that only the MC has any chance of winning this war. The Marines, while being a good force, are not capable of withstanding a Covenant assault, let alone the Flood. So perhaps, Cortana is very motivated in getting the MC off Halo and the heck with everyone else.
2) Cortana has a finite life span, 7 years according to The Fall Of Reach and we do not know when she was created - there is no specific time frame. What if she was already 3 or 4 years old when Halo occurred and she began to examine her own mortality. She knows that only the MC can win this war and she knows he will have problems without her. So she is fighting to get things done before her inevitable "death". What if during the 12 hours she was in the Halo Computer system, she had too much time on her hands and not enough to occupy her. So she began to consider her own possible death. When the MC came back and got her, she wanted to get off this world and complete the mission. Now what mission? The MC's, her's or both?
3) So perhaps her doing the things she does are motivated by outside forces and not necessarily a virus. Although, a virus is not completly out of the question. I think something from the Foreunner or the Index would be the most responsible party if this is indeed the case.
4) I do not think the Flood are aboard the Longsword, if they are when the MC removes his helmet at the end of Halo, he will become infected, just like the Marines.
5) As far as teleportation, I think that was something she learned in the Halo computer and was able to use it – that one time to teleport the MC and her into the Covenant ship. Also, it is a convenient way of moving the story along towards its climax.
6) I do not see a problem with what Cortana said to Foe Hammer. She wanted a pick up and quickly. Foe Hammer is a Marine and Cortana and the MC are superior to her (or at least the chain of command goes through them) and a long description is not necessary. Given an order, I would expect a soldier to follow and not question the details.
7) Given the situation I think the MC had to trust Cortana completely, even if that meant his death. I think the MC would do whatever is necessary to succeed in his mission, and as the Halo 2 Trailer puts it – the Mission is to Stop Destruction of Human Race, which is in Progress. And based upon that trailer, I think Cortana trusts the MC, after all she only asked, “What if We Miss”, she did not try to stop him.
Obviously, we will only know when Halo 2 comes out. Keep up the great thoughts and commentary. Halo is the best game I have played, and definitely the most engaging thanks to the game, the books and this website. I have 3 games currently going at the same time :) I usually do not play games once I solve them – Halo has changed all of that. It is my hope that this continues.
