In Response To: Re: Cortana lying to Foe Hammer (Mark LXIX) : It might have been made while Cortana/MC were flying around in that beat-up
:-) [See below] I think we're probably heading rapidly towards that highly populated 'agree to disagree' territory here though. [g] : No, but we are to assume that Bungie hid it from us as we didn't hear or see
But why 'assume' that they've hidden it? Surely no communication is far more indicative of there being 'no communication' than it is of any assumed communication, just for the sake of it. (Sorry. I know I'm being a bit pigheaded over this. But I'm simply trying to understand how you're arriving at this particualr assumption.) [Bored, everyone else drifts away from the thread :-)] Why include other, arguably less important, exchanges with Foe Hammer, but not one at such a crucial point in the story? Unless, of course, doing so is meant to mean something... Put it this way, and forget Foe Hammer directly for a moment. How much effort would it have been to included an exchange like this as the MC and Cortana fly out of the hanger bay at the end of the Keyes level and off into the distance, sunset, whatever: MC: "Hadn't we better get on and let the others know what we're up to?"
As it is, I can't see why they would have skipped what is basically an important plot related issue. They must have realised that doing so would sow some seeds of speculation. True, it could have gone a bit like this at Bungie: [Tongue In Cheek Mode] Bungie Bloke 1: "Hang on a minute. If we don't have Cortana say something to Foe Hammer a bit earlier about the plan to blow up Halo, isn't that going to look a bit weird and make people think that she's up to something?" Bungie Bloke 2: "Yeah, well... Some nut will probably dig his heels in and speculate about it for weeks until he's blue in the face. There's always one. [shrugs] Don't worry about it though. I'm sure that the rest of our customers will be quite sane about it and just assume that she has said something. Pass the ashtray, will you...?" ...but that sounds even more weird to me than Cortana getting a Flood virus. : However, the absense of
Or that it did... :-) This is supposed to be a properly scripted story, even if it is in a game. One of the important points about any fictional writing is that the reader (whatever) is, for the most, guided along a very precise, pre-planned path. A to B. Nice and linear. The only time you want the reader to get creative and start using their brain is when you specifically choose to make that happen. Leaving out information which is pertinent to events later in the plot is only done for one of two reasons: 1) You're clumsy and need to go on a course for fiction writers. 2) It's intentional, hopefully making the reader speculate during the intervening time and look forward to finding out the 'truth' later on. Of course, I could be talking out of my a$re. In which case, I will probably be humbled to admit it when we find out for sure later on. Damn. Did I just say that..? Rats... : I usually just belt past the Foe Hammer crash scene at the Maw but the
: Why not? What? Why not stop and watch her go down? Sorry. I don't understand. : I don't understand your question. However, logically, external access
Erm... That was exactly my point. Summarising: You were saying that you felt that Foe Hammer must have been told of the plan in advance, otherwise how would she know that the 'crash site' Cortana mentioned was the PoA's? I was pointing out that, given that Cortana mentions both the PoA *and* external access junction 4C, then Foe Hammer would know that the 'crash site' was the PoA's, even if she hadn't been told of the plan at some prior point. : 343 GS: "The installation was specifically built to study and contain
Ah, that old chestnut. I remember now. :-) Yes, it is a little awkward to unwrap. But you're right. It does appear to be implying that 'They' are the Forerunners. 343GS's comment would make far more sense in that context. : It seems quite possible that Cortana radioed Foe Hammer that they were going
Possible, yes. Plausible in the context of this being a carefully scripted story line...? Mmmmmmm.....that's where I have a problem. I just can't see why it should be left so loose at such a critical point, unless there's a very good reason. : Both. :-) :-) : She had already planned the descent of the Pillar of Autumn in the
Er, which part's that? To my knowledge it's Keyes that first suggests 'landing' on Halo, if that's what you mean... : She also called up
Well, Keyes didn't specifically say it, as I saw it. But he did imply it. As in: KEYES: " Notice the pointed questioning tone (in the game) of Cortana's, 'Everyone, sir?'.
Personally, I see this as implying an unsaid, "You mean the Master Chief as well?"
It's doubtful that the Master Chief would be mentioned by name, since those new to Halo wouldn't know who he was at that particular point.
If I'm right [wiggles hand - pulls face], it would be a good example of teasing implication though, just to make the 'reader' query the subtlety of the comment and then have to wait a few moments to find out what it really means.
[shrugs] Well, that's my take on it. :-|
