I believe that the "hitch-hiker" is Cortana. I know that many people have posted about this, but I have facts that others don't. I believe she has a plan of her own. I don't think this plan has anything to do with betraying Humans, but just focuses on delving deeper into the world of Covenant and Forerunner. I believe she has information about these races that she doesn't want exposed just yet. I think she is rampant and i have four reasons:
1. In the level "The Pillair of Autumn" there is a cut-scene when your on the bridge with Keyes. In this cut-scene Cortana is visible in her hologram form. She is purple and blue (very mellow and calm colors A.K.A "cold colors"). Her eyes are also blue and very sincere. You plug her in and she is very polite and nice. Later, in "Two Betrayals" in the first cut-scene Cortana is visible in her hologram form once again. This time she is blue, but red underneath her first layer of blue. I believe this means she is hiding something, whether it be her anger, a secret plan, a new identity, or newly acquired information i dont know, but I think it's a very significant detail. Her eyes are red and she looks very determined and angry. When you plug her in, she is very demanding and bossy. To me this suggests that she has changed while being open to so much information.
2. After being allowed access to all of Halo's information, she suddenly becomes noticeably more inteligent, demanding, and all-together more powerful. This would suggest that something in Halo's control room mainframe, she discovered something that has unleashed her real power, or maybe something binded itself to her and she incorporated these new talents, such as teleportation, dematerialization, and a smart-ass attitude (not really a talent, but maybe a hidden trait).
3. Unlike most AI's, she is a DIRECT COPY of a human mind, Dr.Halsey. This means that she is not limited to the "seven year" life span that most smart AI's are. And because she has the mind of a human, she has the emotions of greed, envy, pain, anger, and the craving for power. This means that being in the control room unlocked some of these emotions that she had never felt before.
Greed - She got greedy so she stole all the information and the index, maybe to used later on.
Envy - She was jealous of 343GS so she tapped into the mainframe searching for ways to better herself and make herself equal or more advanced than 343GS. Teleportation and dematerialization support this, because she did not have these abilities before.
Pain - The Covenant have caused so much pain to her and the Humans that she will do whatever it takes to destroy them, even if all forms of life (including Human) go with them.
Anger - This goes along with pain, in that her possible plan to rid the universe of Covenant is a direct outcome of these emotions.
Craving for Power - Obviously, the most important of all the feelings. When AI's are giving a vast amount of information, they go rampant, or crazy, and constantly seek more power and knowledge. She would then use this knowledge to kill off all the Covenant.
Of Course, this plan of hers could also be against the Humans or Forerunner. The point is, that Cortana is out of control, and MC is her machine to put the plan into action.
4. Lying to Foe Hammer - In "The Maw" Cortana is indeed the "hitch-hiker". She is refered to as a convict because she still has stolen the index. Then, to cover up Halo and all the soldiers that went down with it as an aciident, she keeps her plan to herself. She tells Foe Hammer to pick her up, but doesnt take the effort to tell her the details of their plan. This is her way of getting rid of any evidence that might get her or MC into trouble with UNSC, thus ruining her plan. She knew that Foe Hammer wasn't going to make it, but asking to be evac'ed took care of her for good. Then 343GS flies after the Longsword in the Legendary ending, obviously chasing Cortana to get the index back.
These are just my thoughts and speculations, but I thought I would put them out there. Respond please.
