Holy cow, starcraft's : manual had some really great backstory that totally placed everything in : the universe. It therefore didn't need to be worked into the game, and as : a result, eliminated a lot of expository moments. It wasn't like Halo's : few paragraphs backstory; it was basically 3 chapters in a book. Agreed. Reading a friends copy of the manual for Homeworld is the reason I bought that game. Really well written backstory. You started the game knowing exactly how significant the mothership was, and why.
