In Response To: Re: Criticism of Bungie storytelling (Stephen L. (SoundEffect)) I understand what you mean, regarding the importance of cutscenes (for backstory and such). I would say the first Halo game would be a complete different experience, but a lot of the cutscenes in it could translate to gameplay (such as Cortana and the Monitor arguing, and the cutscene where the Chief is crash landing onto Halo). Of course, we'd miss out on the first cutscenes with Keyes and Sarge -- but since the game hasn't started yet, and you haven't immersed yourself in the character you are playing, it may not be necessary to cut them out. The Flood, the Covenant, and Halo itself would be slightly more mysterious, making you want to search for more information, rather than you being fed it from movies, and throughout the entire game, you would never be cut off ... you'd be 100% immersed, and it'd feel more like you were actually there. Of course, the Xbox couldn't house this much power (we couldn't go from the PoA to Halo without any cuts -- the Xbox can only hold so big of a map with so many things, I'd assume). Now that I think about it ... with our limits of technology, maybe we do need cutscenes. But perhaps someday we'll end up cutting away from them more because the game can make the story unfold through the perspective of the character you are playing.
