I think that neither subtle nor obvious are inherently : good because I've seen both that are great. : But my problem with Halo 3 was that I never knew what was going on exactly.
This is why I'm not too fond of cinematics. If you skip them, or if you don't understand / listen entirely to them ... you may miss key details. (Which is what happens with me in games with a LOT of cinematics). I like games where you have 100% control throughout the entire game ... with the same HUD, the same perspective, etc. and everything unfolds right in front of your eyes so you can actually grasp a lot more information, since you're actually there -- which, in my opinion, is how games are suppose to be. We're not paying money to watch movies, we're paying money to be the guy in that movie! I dunno, that's just my perspective of things. I'm sure others differ.
