Here's why: there Are *NO* Establishing Shots | |

In Response To: Criticism of Bungie storytelling (phatcorns) Here's the number one reason in my eyes that the storytelling fails. You see all these shots of people talking, whether it be the Arbiter or the Chief or whatever. But I rarely have any clue where these talks are happening. From Wikipedia: Establishing Shots For example, an exterior shot of a building at night, followed by an interior shot of a couple talking, implies that the conversation is taking place inside that building. This never happens in Halo, which is why I didn't know that half of Halo 2 happened in High Charity, or even that High Charity was where the Gravemind was. This continues in Halo 3. The ending is the worst example of this. There are no establishing shots to show what happens to the ship that the Chief escapes on. As a result no one that I've met has had any clue what's going on at the end of the game. Here's the perfect example of the problem in Halo 2:
Here are the shots I think are sorely missing from Halo 3 (off the top of my head): SPOILERS!!!! - A shot of the Elite Command ship before showing the talking heads inside
Halo didn't suffer these problems because the overall world was relatively simple: Halo, Pillar of Autumn and the Truth and Reconcilliation. The sequels introduced a much larger number of locations where the action happens. As a result, most people get lost. I think that the story isn't really that complex. Rather, it's poorly told. Bottom line:
