What? In the moments since the crash, Flood forms spread as far as the buildings near the AA gun placement. Clearly a bombardment of just the ship isn't going to work. Knowing the threat they pose-- and the fact that he's backed up against a giant chasm with no other escape route-- the Chief and the Arbiter fight their way back the way they came. En route they are joined by Half-Jaw's troops (a truly uplifting moment in the story, if you ask me, which is why I say the plot really starts on this level) and the objective is given. This is not quite halfway through. More like a third or so. It happens right when you enter the area that used to be the large open area where the first Scarab appears. Also... since when is not endangering the Chief's life any kind of objective? Since when has he not put his life at risk to combat those who threaten humanity, either specifically or in general? I'll admit that sometimes Bungie paints themselves into a corner with the story and has a tough time wriggling out, but I really think there's no issue with this mission-- you're just looking for something to hang a complaint on.
