In Response To: Re: The worst example is Floodgate (elpolloguapo) : Well, that is unfortunately the direction it has always been going. Games : like Halo that are largely plot-driven are an anomaly, not, unfortunately, : the wave of the future. Which is terrible, because if games were developed : in the right way, I can see them being accepted as a literary medium a few : decades down the road. I disagree here. Off the top of my head I can name 3 new plot-driven IPs that sold just as well as, if not better, than most sequels out there. Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, and Mass Effect. All lack any kind of multiplayer whatsoever, but have been praised and accepted by the masses as great games. Assassin's Creed being the least popular, in my experience, but everyone I personally know loved it, and it sold very well. If anything, I think last year has shown that taking a risk with a new game IP is still a fashionable way to make money. Granted, it seems these days new IPs are created with trilogies in mind, but that's not always a bad thing. At least there is an end point the developers are aiming for, and won't try to force the story on forever. Of course, there are some duds, but that's the case no matter which inventive path you take. I think the gaming industry is still aware of that for the most part.
