In Response To: That's not really all that important... (stan) OTOH We find that the fleeing ship is a rebel ship. they have plans of a new secret weapon. The ship has gone to Tatooine because Leia is looking for a former General who helped her father in the Clone wars. So we learn why the ship has been pursued and we know why it went to Tatooine. Leia gives the stolen plans to a droid because the droid has a chance to get off the ship without being destroyed (no life signs). She gives it Obi-Wan's general location and that's were R2 lands. Obi-Wan is looking after Luke from a distance. So Luke is near where Obi-Wan is. The droids get captured by jawas because Jawas are thevies and scavangers. They bring them to Luke's uncle's because they need someone to sell to and the farmers need droids. They are also the closest farm. <- NOT a cooincidence, see above. R2 escapes and heads for Obi-Wan. Luke follows and finds Obi-Wan. Leia's msg convinces Obi-Wan to come out of retirement, he tells Luke of his history and asks for his help. Luke declines but... The empire track down the pod, find signs of droids, find the Jawas, find the Lars, kill them. Luke finds out and decides to help Obi-Wan. They need a ship. They go to a place where they can get one, 'no questions asked'. They go to a place where criminals and smugglers hang out. Han is a smuggler, he needs the money desperately. Obi-Wan and Luke find Han in the place where you'd expect to find a person like Han. Meanwhile, GMT tries to get information from Leia. He takes the DS to her homeworld to threaten her. Luke, OW and HS go to Alderaan for Han's money and OW's need to see the general. Everyone meets up in the Alderaan system, they escape, they are tracked. The secret info, mentioned at the start of the film is used to destroy the DS. Han sucumbs to his better nature, and Chewy's dissaproving looks/peer pressure, and saves the day. The heroes get a medal. Hoorah! :-) All of the above is transparent and makes sense. The characters do the things you'd expect those characters to do given their circumstances. There are plenty of action set pieces but they aren't forced. The story is fun, internally consistent, and serves the action needs of the film. You don't wonder why GMT chose Alderaan as a target. He tells you. And his reasons make sense. We don't wonder why the Millenium Falcon went to Alderaan of all the planets in the galaxy. We know why, and the reasons make sense. Why on earth was Leia on the DS when it was destroying Alderaan? Well, where else would she be? :-) And GMT needed her there to make the threat real. We don't have to invent stuff that we didn't see. We don't have to interpret words to have meanings that are different to their normal meanings. We just watch and understand.
