In Response To: Re: Realization (Rox) Yano this little side thread has confirmed something for me My favourite game is Halo 2. Ive compared it to Empire Strikes Back a few times, and personally I think its a good comparison, because it is a weak, inbetweeny plot, but we learn quite a bit from it. Darth Vader isn't the main badguy, the heirachy of the Empire, The remains of the jedi (ie Yoda, MAJOR character) and of course Vader is Luke's father (OMGWTFSPOILZFOR80SETC) Wiki: "received mixed reviews from critics, even though it has continually grown in esteem to become the highest-regarded chapter of the saga." Halo 2: We learn one or two major things (ie, Earth is fucked, then Cortana's fucked, then the universe is fucked, (metaphorically, careful now :P)), and we learn a good bit of big, non plot centric things (in fact, having mentioned Cortana in the main plot points, it always feels like a minor one to me), Ie all the stuff about the Covenant. The Difference appears to be (in this comparison) that Bungie has dropped some of these little points to satisfy outwardly big Chief fans. Return didn't really drop any of these non plot story details, unless you count Yoda dying about 15-20 minutes in (OMGWTFSPOILZ80SETCAGAN) Reading the EGM, this is probably the best example of how this was done in Halo 3, and also the bit that really pissed me off actually EGM: Why no levels where you play as the alien Arbiter in single-player Halo 3? Were you guys surprised at how much hate he received after Halo 2? Tyson Green: I wouldn't say surprised. We knew some people weren't going to like it. I feel like if [Halo 2] had actually closed off in a better fashion, fewer people would have minded. It's like the Arbiter became the scapegoat for the story not ending. "Bungie bit off more than they could chew because of this Arbiter character and then they couldn't finish the game." But it was clear from the very onset that the last game in the trilogy was going to be the Master Chief's story. There were various discussions early on about whether or not you would play as the Arbiter for one or two missions and then...there was even talk of, "We should kill the Arbiter! Yeah! Get rid of 'im!" In my opinion, cooler heads prevailed and we said, "No, let's make him a cool character in the story, but still keep the focus on the Chief." I think it worked out well. So, we get introduced to the Covenant point of view, and more importantly, an alien point of view. Which by this seems to me was planned to be dropped for the next one. True a few levels were suggested, but that was only a few, not a proper story (This is what I get from reading it, not necessarily set in stone, just to clarify in case I get flamed). In laymen's terms:
A better alternative for me would have been saying that yes, fan pressure shoved him into the sidelines. Not a happy thought, but at least The Arbiter might once of had a greater purpose which has been lost. HALO 2 FOR THE WIN!
