3 frames taken every 10 seconds during the opening cutscene of The Ark. You can CLEARLY see that the Shadow of Intent is in the middle of the Elite fleet, which is above the surface of the Ark. You can also see, 20 seconds later, that there is a massive brute fleet heading towards your small fleet. After a few more seconds you see the interior of the Shadow of Intent. : : There is a decent one at the beginning of the Ark. : Fair point. Just to illustrate, looking at the above image shots from the cutscene, you can see that about 1/4 of the Ark is shown. If you still aren't sure what it looks like, this shot (from near the end of the same level) clearly shows the shape of the whole thing. : : It pops up in front of your face, right out of that big pit in the middle

Watch the opening and closing cutscenes from the last level. There are multiple shots of all of Installation 04a during the opening cutscene, which show it's location relative to the Ark.
This shot is from about 1:02 in the closing cinematic of that level. You can see most of the Ark, and the Halo ring (big, glowing, yellow-white ring).
