In Response To: Re: Hokey stories and ancient religions. (scarab) From my point of view (but I've put an inordinate amount of thinking into the economics/politics behing the Covenant perspective for a fic I wrote) much of the story slots into place easily. There is subtlty and then there is white wash, and I think Halo suffers a little from having to cater to the masses. It cannot really dive into the crazy world it inhabits, it can't give us the reasons or the questions we seek because for the casual gamer it would be shit hard and confusing. Personally, I think games should take this route and not dismiss the casual gamer out of hand, but that's another debate. So the universe is painted in broad strokes and if you want, you can take a step back and look at the larger impressionist painting and try to figure things out with a bit of a Bungie slant. Enter the HSP, the HaloWiki and all sorts of fanfic and the like. The comparisons to Star Wars aren't helpful because the original trilogy works because of its archetypes. Now where in Halo is there an archetype? Asides from Cortana, as a sort of mischievous spirit, in my opinion there's no real classic hero in there. Spartan-117 is a golem, mindless and driven. (Unless you choose to be the crazy type of fan that I am and search more) The Arbiter is more of a classic fallen hero, seen from both sides as a devil rising to a guardian angel, or the fallen angel turning to the demon, take your pick. But he is relegated painfully in the third game. If you were going to compare with Star Wars you would need the Damsel in Distress, the Rogue, the Naive Hero, the Old Mentor. Star Wars is only good because it is character driven. I don't read the books any more, I don't find the extended universe to be at all compelling. Everything I take, I take from the games.
