In Response To: Re: Criticism of Bungie storytelling (Narcogen) All good points, I kinda respond to some in my other post above this one. : Compare to Marathon, where you can finish all three games and not know
Marathon is great and I still enjoy playing it; it is in many ways like reading a good book. It's also an old series and storytelling in games has evolved. Halo modernizes it with its cut scenes and later terminals (woohoo :)) and should probably be compared with its contemporary games. : Subtlety rewards those who engage the experience mentally and pay attention
Actually, I guess not. The Halo series is as solid a game series as has ever been released. I was actually thinking about just how big it was in the shower today, because it launched Bungie from being just a company that makes great games to a true leader in the industry in every measurable sense whether that's sales or innovation or acclaim. Nothing is perfect though, and Halo's story (which I love) could have been even more encompassing for people. The reason I feel so strongly about this is because of my disappointment whenever I hear the majority of people who like "Halo" who just completely dismiss the single player game. Now they might not ever play it in the first place, but it makes the criticisms that get voiced against the campaign even more important in my eyes, because maybe if things were just a little more fine tuned, those few people who can criticize it would have less to say. : I guess I'm too much of a Halo nut to really see that. It's not a question of
Side note: I need to remember to play Black. I waited until I got a 360 because I wanted to play it upscaled and because I didn't want to pay (or rent) full price for what is apparently a very short game. It looks like fun, though. It's definitely a fine line between saying too much and not saying enough, and like I said, my other post compares Halo vs. Half-Life 2 and kinda touches on that. Bungie has the storytelling chops in spades, and definitely tell a better story than most shooters in my opinion. When I think of painful to listen to FPS games, I think Far Cry (PC version). The dialog is so bad and so ridiculous that it makes me laugh just thinking about it, but in retrospect that might have been trying for that.
