In Response To: Criticism of Bungie storytelling (phatcorns) Haven't been around much recently. Quite a big thread going on here. This wouldn't be a direct reply to the first post. Just something I thought of whilst reading some other posts in the thread. I'm thinking of Gears of War's "Y" button function. To quote "Look at point of interest". For those who haven't played Gears a quick explanation you'll have your audio cues and instead of having to look around you just had to press "Y" and focus would go directly to the important stuff. Having followed Halo through and it's story/Camapaign being why I like the game something like the "Y" button function in Halo3 would of been lost on me. I didn't need it. Indeed when I first played Halo3 even though I was playing on Normal I died a few times because something relating to story took my attention. But with Gears I used it a lot of times. Story is important for me in games. Even an old friend who plays Halo co-op with me occasionally but is not a big gamer was using the "Y" button in Gears. I've always thought it was really good how Epic stuck it in the game although I don't know if it was just because they had a button left over or if it was in the design from the start. I imagine other developers have considered it as well but it comes down to room on the pad. With Halo 3 I seem to remember even the "Back" button is used. Anybody have any thoughts on Gears "Y" button? Some Halo3 spoilers below.
