In Response To: Realization (DHalo) : Even though Halo 2 is at the bottom of my Halo favorites list, I just : realized where it placed #1. The storytelling wasn't fabulous (Halo 3's : was really good IMO), but the game seemed to be driven by plot, where the : gameplay was NOT sacrificed for plot at the same time. I absolutely agree. I think Halo 3 may be the worst of the bunch in that aspect. I mean, even in the first game you were always given something new to strive for in each level. First one, you try to fend off the Covenant boarding parties, then escape. Second, you have to find all your buddies. Third, you head out to save the captain. Fourth, you try to find a way to get to a place you learned about in the last level. Fifth, you find said place and try to get to it. Sixth, you learn of a new threat and head out to save your buddies from it. Seventh, a mysterious new lightbulb teaches you new things about the ring and its history, and gets you to fetch a key to unlock the ring's 'weapon'. Eighth, you find out that it's not really an anti-Flood weapon and you have to stop the lightbulb from activating it on his own. Ninth, you go back to try to save the captain, again, so you can use him to blow the ring up. Tenth, you go back to the Autumn in order to blow it up. Halo 2 had a similar deal where each level seemed to have a very clear motivation behind it. First, save a space station from invasion, in order to protect earth. Second, a ship slips through and you have to go down and fend off the invasion from the ground. Third... well, same thing. Fourth, new character arc! Arby is sent on a mission to kill some unbelievers that seem to be trying to spread some interesting propaganda about the Prophets. Fifth, same thing... Sixth, the invaders on Earth have fled, but it's still not clear how they knew about Earth and why they came, so you have to follow them to find out. Seventh, same thing. Eighth, Arby gets sent on a mission to retrieve another Index so the new ring can be activated. Ninth, wow, same thing... Tenth, Chief and Arby meet the Gravemind, he makes sure they both know that none of them really want the rings to go off, and sends each of them off to search for the Index in the two most likeliest places to find them. From there, Chief goes to High Charity to hunt down Truth while Arby meanders around on Delta Halo, trying to get to the control room to stop it from being activated. Halo 2 definitely had more story elements inbetween levels, also, with a lot of behind-the-scenes Covenant stuff to teach us a lot more about what's going on. Now, Halo 3 is like... First, you land on Earth and go to a base. Second, you hang out in that base. Because Miranda tells you to. Apparently, there's a plan of some sort, but you don't really get to know much about it. Third, base blows up, "The best thing to do would be to get some distance between us and the base". Okay, random driving until you find out you should go to Voi for some reason. I can't remember why you're supposed to go to Voi... Fourth, you blow up a ton of anti-air stuff so spaceships can fly around and shoot at Truth's ship, which ends up having no effect at all. Five, Truth escapes, Flood on Earth, but apparently Cortana is on the ship, so you have to go get here. Six, turns out it wasn't Cortana, but there's... something useful in the place Truth went to. You go there and explore and try to find out what the heck you're doing there. You find out where Truth went. Seven, you go to Truth and stop him. For real this time. Eight, Flood on Ark, go find Cortana. For real this time. Nine, blow up the ring. The first four levels are definitely filler. There's no real motivation to any of them. Only The Storm is directly related to your primary task, stopping Truth, but as it turns out, nothing you did actually makes any difference. And then there's Floodgate, in which you find Cortana, but not really. Even without her recording, I think the most logical thing to do would be to still follow Truth through the portal, so that whole level also does nothing to further the story. On the Ark, your primary task is to figure out what to do. Yay, vague objective. And the last three levels are like a checklist. Find Truth, stop Truth. Find Cortana, rescue Cortana. Get to the Control Room, blow up the ring. And throughout the whole thing, we've learned nothing new about the Forerunner (not counting the terminals), nothing about the Covenant, and very little about the Flood. In fact, what with Truth's new personality, it feels more like we've unlearned some about the Covenant... No, I liked the first two games for their gameplay and story, but Halo 3 is just fun. Not interesting..
