In CE, the elites work like this: Blues and reds function similarily, but the reds are tougher and more aggressive; they tend to wield PR's but occasionally have needlers. Golds are similar to those two, but are insanely aggressive and shoot their PR's with insane aggression even on easy, and they sometimes have swords instead of PR's. They never use needlers. Cloaked elites are shieldless and generally weak, and when uncloaked their armour is a light blue-grey-ish. They have either PR's or swords. Black elites only show up late in the game. They're tough and aggressive, in some ways comparable to reds. However, they also through plasma grenades.
