True enough, though if one bares in mind that most Halo players have never read any of the novels, they probably won't find any of the inconsistencies that have caused such an uproar.
That's not to say its an excuse per se, just making the point that a huge chunk of the Halo story has always been utterly dependant upon external sources and these are essential to its true comprehension, so this really isn't anything all that new. Learning how and why the Human/Covenant war started in the first place is probably one of the bigger examples. None of the games have even remotely touched on that at all.
