In Response To: Re: That's stupid from a gaming standpoint *SP* (thebruce0) : But that's what I mean - what conflicts are there, in ONLY game content, : between each game? As far as I understand it, everything's consistent - : not necessarily with other external content/canon, but internally, anyone : not exposed to any story content except the games, I believe, should : really be confused. The games are entirely consistent. The point is, I had no idea how this Cortana thing worked given what I knew about outside canon as well as those first lines of H1. I love the retcon with PoA being on Reach, but I couldn't figure out if I was actually delivering Cortana, or if Bungie was making it so that Cortana was really never on the PoA to start, or if I was delivering a piece of her, or what was going on. I would have found out when I read the journal, but not everyone is going to have that luxury, and thus they will be just as confused as I am if they try and take everything together like I did. : Like, without any knowledge of AIs being split up, Halo 1 starts with the
It's extremely consistent once you throw out half of TFoR. And I've now done that and love what Bungie's done with the story. The point is, I shouldn't have had to go to another source to fix my confusion. If I had only been able to afford the Standard Edition, and if I didn't see a post at HBO explaining this to me, I'd have no clue about what just went on with Cortana in the game without going to Halopedia or some other outside source. So yes, it's perfectly fine and good story telling in terms of the game canon, but considering it's a video game prequel made some nine years after tons of info became available, it was absolutely initially confusing and didn't appear to try and reconcile that bit of canon at all (even while other parts were being thrown out, I couldn't just assume that half the novel was). Now that I know that half the novel was, I'm fine. : IMO, the moment a player shows 'confusion' about a story, that person is
Yep. I'm not one of the hardcore people who need everything in the games to be 100% on their own, with the books coming second. I feel that the books only come second as an addition to the video game canon. That's why I couldn't figure out if Cortana just had a retcon (we deliver her in her entirety to PoA), or if something else happened.
