In Response To: Re: That's stupid from a gaming standpoint *SP* (Louis Wu) : tl;dr: The games are internally consistent. I'm afraid not. Reach shows that Cortana has an immense amount of Forerunner knowledge downloaded into her from the dig below Sword base. This is implied regardless of whether or not you interpret the story as Cortana essentially having been ‘born’ from this information (which is in contradiction to not only The Fall of Reach, but more significantly, Halsey's diary supplied with the game), which is kind of what the cutscene in the game suggests. Cortana being in possession of this knowledge conflicts massively with the majority of the first half of Halo, in terms of trying to discover what the ring is, who built it, and what it does. Either the knowledge that she was given by Halsey wasn't anywhere near significant enough to warrant the desperate rush to get it to the Pillar of Autumn, (I dunno, maybe it was the Forerunner equivalent of the complete works of Shakespeare?) or Cortana was essentially well aware what the Halo ring was but decided not to bother telling us until halfway through the first game.
