Yeah...
That's actually a more recent opinion. Prior to the start of filming The Phantom Menace, he sort of viewed comics and books as the way to continue the Star Wars story.

And then when he started filming, he realized that (Oh noes!) he might actually HAVE to stick with some of the GOOD ideas that the SWEU writers came up with! He might actually have to make the Capital of the Republic a city-planet called "Coruscant"!

So, essentially, the SWEU policy became "It's not canon unless Georgie Boy likes it and wants to use it himself."
