In Response To: I think we hold the books in too high a regard. (Riceatron) I'm frustrated with the canon because Bungie said many, many times that the books are, indeed, canon. I don't mind a few inconsistencies, like the PoA being unable to enter atmosphere or whatever. Who cares? But when one book says "Halsey doesn't know about Spartan IIIs" and then the game shows Halsey interacting with Spartan IIIs, it's a little hard to swallow. Either Bungie should've told us "yeah, they just do their own thing, we don't really consider it part of our universe" or they should've created a tighter universe. And the reason some people get upset with Bungie over this nonsense is because the story in the early books (i.e. Fall of Reach, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx; i.e. the Nylund books) is better than the game's stories and the later novels. When Bungie contradicted these works, they're saying "we don't care about that stuff," and, by extension, telling a particular group of fans "we don't care that you think this is the best fiction we have, we're doing what we want." I don't think Bungie should have to work around the novels. I've never been upset that MC was the only Spartan in the main trilogy. But, they at least gave the novels room to work. They really didn't provide any wiggle room with Halo: Reach.
