I doubt Bungie will ever say anything other than "We took all the canon very seriously".
But one can't help but wonder that with this being their very last bit of Halo work, they wanted to do exactly what they wanted to do and not have any interference at all.
And it might also have been a bit of a
"There you go MS, we had fun but we're moving on now. Have fun sorting all this new stuff out!"
And then they ROFL away.
