| A longer term fan's perspective | |

In Response To: I think we hold the books in too high a regard. (Riceatron) I read Fall of Reach prior to playing Halo because I'd been a fan of Bungie in the past and was thrilled when I heard an actual full book of back story was being done for their next game. The level of detail that Bungie put into the Marathon series was insane, so I was excited to see what the story was behind the (then) next gen Bungie FPS. Marathon's story was so in depth that there was even an explanation for saving the game... inside the game. Regardless of how anyone feels about the quality of the Halo books, Bungie has always differentiated itself from its contemporary FPS developers by claiming to care about their story. As Halo and Bungie have gotten bigger and bigger though, that focus from the fan's perspective has to be that they've lost it. Bungie cares about the Halo story insofar that it allows them to do cool stuff within its frame, but clearly whatever "Halo Bible" they have/had is inadequate to cover the details necessary to properly fit something like a prequel into the canon as it exists now. Maybe Bungie wasn't completely on board with the idea that they'd have additional story material outside of the games... maybe it was 100% a Microsoft decision that Bungie just kinda went along with as terms of being one of their dev studios, but whatever the reason, Bungie brought that on when they joined Microsoft in the first place. I appreciated all the nods to the outside fiction such as Halsey being in the game, Spartan IIIs being in the game/playable, and even just the fact that we got to witness the invasion of Reach. Dr. Halsey's Journal (and bringing back Nylund to write it) was INCREDIBLE. I'm willing to let the majority of the canonical mistakes slide since I really enjoyed the series anyway and since Bungie obviously does care about making good games (which they do), but as a final statement for Halo's fiction, Bungie basically said, "we're going to do what we're going to do, regardless of whatever story has come before (especially from outside of Bungie)." My hope for the next big Bungie series is that they work much more closely with whomever will be writing their outside fiction so that it remains consistent throughout the course of that series.
