In Response To: Re: That's stupid from a gaming standpoint *SP* (Avateur) Actually your comment was about the journal, not the novels: "You're telling me I have to read the journal to understand how Reach's story makes sense?" In this case, most certainly - the journal was included with the game. It wasn't a separate purchase you can get at the bookstore. Regardless of who wrote it, it was included with the game, therefore what it contains plotwise is and must be complementary to the game. Halo is a franchise now - you could view it as games vs extended universe (other media), but even just as games, anything you get with the games should be considered 'necessary reading'. Like you said, you bought the legendary, but haven't yet read the journal... why the hell not? rather, why'd you buy anything more than the standard edition if you really didn't want the 'extended content' offered by non-video-game items? Unless you ONLY wanted the Noble figurine, in which case you may as well Read the journal. Really, even if you bought only the game w/o the Ltd. ed. content, Reach flows into Halo 1. All you really know is that basically Cortana was brought onto the PoA, and in Halo 1 she was matched with Chief when it jumped out of slipspace at the Halo (coordinates provided by Cortana) escaping the heat of battle. Gamewise, as far as I'm concerned, it flows.
But to say you shouldn't have to read the journal to understand the story, well, sorry you feel that way. You got a lot less value than you could have for the $ you paid.
