Yeah, I think we can probably put the worse from "for better or worse the novels are cannon" quote in all caps now. I guess they were more unhappy with some of Nylund's story elements than we thought. That bitter cannon trumping definitely happens though. It just did in the aforementioned Star Wars. I don't think George Lucas was very happy with some of the ideas presented in Karen Traviss' Republic Commando novels, and it looks like those are basically being retconned out of cannon by the animated kids show 'Clone Wars.' When they decided to bring Mandalorians into the show, the writers initially presented a script that incorporated the parts of the universe that Traviss invented, but GL asked for something else that ended up completely disregarding her novels. Its annoying any time previous works are retroactively changed, but its particularly painful when the original seems so much stronger. The Spartan II's, Keyes, and the MAC guns' last defense of Reach was probably my favorite part of Halo. Great story that really set a perfect emotional setting for the first game. Likewise, Karen Traviss' stories about the clone soldiers and Mandalorians was my favorite part of Star Wars. It always sucks to see your team lose, especially when its due to a bunch of bad calls by the officials. But again, I was never really expecting Reach to stay true to the novels to begin with.
