Sad, but hardly unique, especially in a large sci-fi universe. Enough of a problem in Star Wars that Lucas Licensing has been hugely involved in communicating with the fans on the very subject, creating the 'holocron' with its 5 levels of canon. Mass Effect is no better off. For all its detail in a universe and how well thought out it is, incorporating significant player choices and their effect on that universe means every Mass Effect game is, in essence, fan fiction.
By comparison, Halo has it easy when it comes to fans wanting to talk about the universe! But with Halo, of course there wasn't proper care exercised at the beginning. No one knew it would be so successful, spawn best selling novels, comics etc.
