Since I'm sort of in a similar boat, I'll make my position clear: No matter who made it or why, I think the trailer is subpar at best. Had the trailer been made by Bungie, I would likely have admitted it was crap, but taken the position that, given on past track record, either the flaws in the trailer don't mean the game would also be bad, or that if it did, they could likely be rectified prior to release. The trailer was not made by Bungie. That makes it neither better nor worse. It may, however, change my expectations for the game, and not for the better, because in wondering what the relationship is between the two, I have nothing to go on with 343i, whereas with Bungie I have all the previous Halo titles to go on, as well as the Marathon and Myth titles before that.
