They could have seen the alien construct in the : distance. Quick shots of the Chief raiding an armory. A quick shot showing : him repairing/fiddling with his armor. A quick shot of removing Cortana : from the ship. He moves to the front of the ship. The alien construct is : closer. Closer. Closer. The chief readies his weapon, and BOOSTERS. I : suddenly have nothing to complain about! My theory is Cortana was going through a sleep cycle so the chief woke up to take a wizz off of the exposed end of the Forward Unto Dawn where he spotted the Forerunner installation in the distance. Knowing that he had a reputation to live up to, he sneaked around the ship, upgraded his jetpack, fiddled with his armor and dropped a few grenade launchers around in key locations prior to returning to his Cryo Tube before Cortana's sleep cycle finished. The next thing you know its CHIEF CHIEF WAKE UP - HOLY SHIT IM HERE - BOOSTERS ENGAGE - OH LOOK A GRENADE LAUNCHER KABLAMMO - WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING I HAVENT SEEN IT BEFORE, HONEST, BUT I'M READY TO KICK ITS ASS! It all makes sense
