In Response To: You people are confusing me. (Louis Wu)
I was sure Frankie had actually talked a little about this at E3, and although I can't find the precise article where he discussed it that I'd seen before, I did find this quote from him in a video interview with IGN:
Now, what he says is somewhat ambiguous and perhaps misleading. You could interpret it that some time has passed between the events at the end of Halo 3 and the start of Halo 4, or you could argue that some time has passed between the end of the legendary cinematic at the end of Halo 3 and the start of Halo 4. These are different statements, but I think the former is more likely true — the fact that a significant period of time has passed since the end of the Human–Covenant War is the crucial point; not that the remains of the Forward Unto Dawn spent a long time sat in space next to a (potentially) Forerunner world of some sort, during which time not a lot of significance happened. I don't think it makes a lot of sense from a storytelling perspective to have two long chunks of time pass by without there being some significance to the midpoint. My interpretation of the trailer and timeline is this: that a long time has passed since the end of the war, and the remains of the Forward Unto Dawn have encountered a Forerunner artefact of some kind. During that time, maybe Cortana got busy and modified the chief's suit, but the teaser trailer picks up with the next significant event: the Forward Unto Dawn rapidly hurtling towards the Forerunner artefact, upon which some sort of orifice has opened up, apparently about to swallow the Forward Unto Dawn. That all said, there is some ambiguity to how Frankie explained it that could mean that yes, the FUD had indeed spent a long time right by that artefact, sat there doing nothing, with Master Chief catching Zs in a cryotube. But frankly that's just not interesting enough to be worth giving much thought to.
