I think there's a distinction that some aren't aware of. Retcon isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's how it's handled that makes it good or bad. To me, the integrated maneuvering jets in the Chief's armor is acceptable retroactive continuity. It's a new functionality that has been added later than initially designed and it maintain continuity. The shoulders for example (or even the gauntlets between Halo 2 and 3 are bad examples of retroactive continuity. Continuity is broken because apparently no chance was around for the shoulders or gauntlets to have been physically altered. Good retcons introduce something new without breaking continuity.
