In Response To: Re: Interesting Frankie Quote (Stephen L. (SoundEffect)) : I see the gauntlets and shoulder changes the same way I view seeing a : Stormtrooper helmet versus a Clone Tropper Helmet from Star Wars. At a : mere glance I can tell which is which. Those are actually two distinctly different designs, and are intended to be. So when you see changes to the Chief's design-- although voiced by the same actor, and everyone in the work treats him as if he is the Chief, do you think that you're being subtly fooled-- that this is an impostor? : The Chief should not look fundamentally different than he did going into Cryo
Which would make him sort of an idiot-- which to me is much, much worse than any change they could possibly make to his appearance. I'd sooner see them paint him pink than ask me to believe there was a capability in that suit that would have saved his life multiple times, or otherwise have been of use, but wasn't available. That reason doesn't have to be that grand for me to
Throw out the novels, and accept that Spartans are ground troops-- the only arena in which the UNSC ever had a chance against the Covenant. In that context, of what possible use are EVA thrusters? Do they justify their own weight in the suit, plus fuel? Wouldn't it make more sense for this to be a special piece of equipment, or something requiring some retrofitting? If every Spartan suit contains them, small enough to be concealed, why are Ranger Elite packs so bulky? If the Ranger packs are larger, special, higher-powered, why don't all regular Elite armor suits contain at least rudimentary thrusters as you describe being appropriate for the Mjolnir armor? I don't think Mjolnir was ever intended to indicate that UNSC technology (no matter what its ultimate source) is superior to Covenant technology. The Spartan program was a strategy to invest additional funding in training and equipment for a small group of elite soldiers in order to generate battlefield advantage in certain specific circumstances. That means a few soldiers get equipment as good as what the Elites have, but it's generally not as good and is bulkier. In that scenario, how is it believable at all that thrusters doing what that video shows have been concealed in the armor all along? Where is the comparable Covenant tech? If the Chief does have these thrusters, what possible justification would there be in not including their use or appearance during Cairo Station? I'd say the point of that sequence is specifically to put the Chief at a disadvantage compared to Ranger Elites, who have jetpacks. So now he's a macho idiot-- he could use his jets, but he won't, because that would be cheating. Makes my head hurt. Integrity of visual appearance is greatly to be desired, but not at the expense of integrity of characterization.
