In Response To: Hawaiian Pig's Fantabulous Story Review *SP* (Hawaiian Pig)
I agreed with the review wholeheartedly, Reach wasn't the storytelling masterpiece -in fact the other games weren't high up on the tier either. I found my biggest problem was the lack of taking care of canon, they ignored it, sure there were nods to it, but overall Bungie said screw it and ignored what they previously put down on paper -the Novels. Why a creator does have full reign over their own creations, you must admit, you are producing it to entertain and potentially enlighten some fans that play that said creation. Pulling a Lucas isn't something that I would cheer for. But figuring -in my opinion, which is pretty critical- Bungie knew it would sell and didn't give a damn. Same thing with Halo 3, a subpar ending to a story strong Halo 2. They knew it, but unlike movies or television, people don't play games for story, they play for the multiplayer experience. But anyway...
I bought Halo: Reach to see Fall of Reach in videogame form, I wanted to Fred, Kelly and the other Spartans fighting to save a dying world. Hell, the scene of them jumping from the Pelican without 'chutes would've done it for me. But it didn't happen, from what I played, I was let down. The game had so much potential, it had a whole world it could've used, but instead dropped the ball. I shouldn't have expected it, Halo 2's faux beginnings that were changed from the trailer -but overall still rewarding-, and Halo 3's failure to finish... But you know what, the MP experience will save it.
