: No one wants to hear a story about a grunt soldier who carries out his
: commands on various objectives and then dies. This is mundane... it's not
: really engaging, inspiring, intriguing or anything interesting at all.

: Blah blah blah. No one cares about these things.

Speak for yourself. I've read books like that which chronicled the day to day life of a what its like being a fast-jet pilot in peace time.
There is no story, but does not mean the book wasn't any of those things.
Heck, by your statement, you'd think no one at all is interested in documentaries.

: So should we just drop the notion that video games are trying to tell stories
: at all?

Perhaps we can drop the notion that all video games are trying to tell a story.

But Reach does tell a story. Just might not be the kind you wanted.

One of the things Bungie were going for with Reach, as mentioned in the commentary, was to actually give it a documentary type of feel.
That's why most of the cinematics are done to appear like the are shot from a hand held camera, as if there is a camera man following the Spartans around. They had rules about this camera man, though they did break them on one occasion.
When that's not happening, we tend to cut to vehicle mounted and security cameras.
And Helmet mounted cameras of course.
