Maybe Reach was Bungie's way of : saying that Halo was their story. lol, don't get me wrong. I've certainly been more than critical of the perception that the novels, and Mr. Nylund especially, is infallible. Said a fair few times I'm not really a fan of his writing style in the Halo novels he has done, they just didn't have the character development I especially like in reading. Though GoO was an improvement in that area. Kurt was a good character. There are certainly things I would like to discount from the canon though, especially the novels, and while I do kind of pick and choose when it comes to my own personal take on the Halo universe, I keep all of that to myself and don't really bring that onto HBO too much. I'll recite 'canon' and discuss it, but that doesn't mean I like it all. The commentary does say that they were very careful regarding dates and the existing canon, though whether or not that was another little cheeky tongue-in-cheek moment, I don't know.
