In Response To: Re: Hawaiian Pig's Fantabulous Story Review *SP* (scarab) : Some points on Six I think you've hopped onto the "point" of Six, but I think you're missing that he isn't really a "character." A character is a person acting in a story and reacting to its situations, and ultimately all of these reactions that you describe are mostly your own. Which is the point anyway, you are the character. Just a quick example: When you say Six "didn't know what to do with Jorge's dog tags," I actually interpreted that scene as Six saying "Hey, Emile, show damned some respect, this guy just died for us." But that's my interpretation. This is how Bungie intended Six to pan out; you're supposed to feel like you're him/her. That being said, as far as writing goes, your reactions and what you ascribe to Six isn't really the "character." We all treat the silence in different ways. As far as Six is handled, the writing isn't too bad... that's mainly because there isn't much writing to be done anyway. : I also don't agree with your dichotomy. You hold the trilogy and the next two
Honestly, ODST did a much better job with characterization. Now this might be due to the stellar voice cast they had, but I was watching the first cutscene in ODST (when doing this post), and noticed how believable the interactions are between these characters. For what it set out to do ODST's characters are top notch. The writing and acting reflect that. Still, the unfortunate disjointed sense of story is present in both games. Once again, most of the conflict is borne out of your mundane objectives. This is why it feels like "nothing happens" until there's something worth being interested in: Virgil or Cortana, in each game respectively. In the trilogy, practically every mission has you thinking "Holy crap, I need to get through this because there's a lot at stake." Now, while that was easier to do because the universe hung in the balance, even with the narrow scope, the smaller scale, you need to instill this sense of urgency for your characters. What book or movie focuses attention on a set of generators for 20% of its duration? Not denying this is extremely hard to do for a video game where your player needs "stuff to do," but it feels like a lack of creativity if anything. : I share some of your opinions about the
It was mishandled in my opinion. The Chief is just about as much of a faceless killing machine, and we got a really nice introduction to him with the unfreezing from cryo. And the rest of the series worked against this by ascribing him a few scant personality traits that, like Six, we mostly infer. : They set you up to think of him as a faceless killing automaton so that
: I'm going to stop now (just didn't realize how tired I was until I tried to
Thanks for the input. I can't say I disagree with your points on Six, but I don't think they redeem the lack of characterization and coherence of plot.
