In Response To: Hawaiian Pig's Fantabulous Story Review *SP* (Hawaiian Pig) I'm so completely in disagreement with you that I'm fairly certain we're from different planets. Where you are disappointed in the lack of EPIC and what seems, to you, arbitrary and meaningless courier runs, I see exactly what Bungie promised. The fact is, not everyone wants to spend the bulk of their gaming time watching a cutscene. Bungie realized this, and therefore left most of the character development in the actual gameplay itself. Next time you are playing through Tip of the Spear, LISTEN to what Kat is saying. That is where you get the sense that she's a tech geek (with an awesome robot arm), not some cutscene that was really meant for a different purpose (surly you saw those Zealots bust in there and grab that woman, or were you too busy complaining that Noble 6 isn't John-117?). And again, you say these characters are two-dimentional, that they "fall flat." Have you ever met anybody that fought in a war? That got shot at on a daily basis? That was imprinted with the "kill or be killed" mentality? Well, I have. And to a certain degree, they lose a bit of their humanity. Now, imagine that your WHOLE LIFE was dedicated to the art of war. Would you even have half the personality that Jorge has? To have the compassion he has, although is he scorned by Emile for having it? And, I know I'm treading on hallowed ground, but by your same logic, what personallity do we see in Master Chief? I have played to Classic trilogy more times than I can remember, dedicating every last scrap of information to memory. And after all that time playing, do you know what character John has? Same as Noble 6. Generic Badass. That is, if we were to guage his character soley on cutscenes. I can only think of a few cutscenes in the whole of the original trilogy that depicts any form of depth of character for John (Halo 2 being wholly devoid of them). And yet I see you laud the original trilogy, hold it in such high esteem for the same thing you so utterly dismissed in Reach. It isn't the objectives you are sent to complete that makes a character. It's what happens in between that gives the character depth. It wasn't the fact that Master Chief had to use his own armor shields to overload the generators in Two Betrayals that made that particular level so epic and memorable. It was the sheer scale of combat, and the sandbox approach that made it so. In that same vein, it wasn't the fact that you had to reactivate the AA gun (that was actually important to the story, and I can't for the life of me see how you would think it was pointless), it was the battle Noble 6 and Kat fought along the way that made the time spent worthwhile. I urge you, play through the campaign one more time, and this time, instead of looking for reasons to hate it, really let the story play out. Accept the darker tone Bungie was going for. As with ODST (another game I loved, but seem to be the only one), the idea isn't to tell some epic space opera. It's to tell the story of a planets destruction, and that of a Team of brave Spartans who gave their all to prevent it.
