Probably because they're shamelessly borrowed : from Firefly, and consequently for anyone who's a fan of the show they're : already known and loved individuals. Think of some of the dialog they use : - Adam Baldwin's metaphysical question at the end of Uplift Reserve, or : Alan Tudyk's line about getting to drive the tank. Seriously, this is probably the only reason why it felt like they worked. Their voice acting and their dialogue was ripped straight from their characters on Firefly. But hey, those characters are interesting; ODST piggybacked off of that and it worked. With Reach the writing-training-wheels were off. :/
