In Response To: Hawaiian Pig's Fantabulous Story Review *SP* (Hawaiian Pig) Its a long post to comment on and that always inhibits response, where do you start? I agree with some of the stuff that you and Cody mention but I think that you both over egg the cake. We were told that Noble 6 was a badass lone wolf but we see that he was deeply affected by Jorge's death. He looks subdued and down at the start of the city level He couldn't do anything to save Jorge but at least he can save some civilians, do something to help someone, make a small difference. Jorge was a compassionate person who cared about the 'little people' (no, not leprechauns). 6 took the chance to do what Jorge could no longer do, to help the small people. It struck me when I entered the plaza just how unequipped these people were to face the units that they were facing (both literally and metaphorically). I had a Mjolnir armor suit, recharging energy shields, weapons, and the training to use them. This brought me back to the feelings that I had in the first game when I helped out the marines at the first beam tower. I was glad to help. We saw that Carter understood 6. And it was not from his dialog, it was the hand on his back. We could see that 6 didn't know what to do with Jorge's dog tags. And we saw how they carried Kat's body. So we saw some character development with 6. Or at least we saw that he was not the person who we thought he was from Kat's research. He was more badass than Emile but he was also more of a people person. He was not an automaton. Wu said that 6's voice was too young (in Narc's podcast) but I think that Wu realized (as he said it) that it makes sense that 6 is young. It fits the fiction and fits the fact that soldiers are young, we send our young men into horrible situations and they have to learn to cope (or not). The difference between the Chief and 6 is that the Chief is lucky and 6 was not. The Chief wouldn't have been killed in the end. Some lucky accident would have given him the means to escape the battle. He and Cortana would have exchanged quips and we would have seen Reach go up in the distance as we faded to the credits. It would have been epic and cool and superficially touching. We could say how terrible it was that Reach died but at least our heroes would be essentially unfazed. They would feel the events, but not really, it would be a vicarious sorrow. Going back to comparing 6 and MC... They are both hyper-lethal but the Chief is a winner and 6 was a loser. I still felt for the guy though. My original stance was to dislike this soulless badass but I grew to like him when I saw that he was more than just an empty killing machine. And because I liked him it was unpleasant to see him die. I felt for the character. So the game wasn't an empty experience for me. I also don't agree with your dichotomy. You hold the trilogy and the next two games as separate things but the crimes you see in ODST and Reach were also present in the trilogy, to the degree that I don't see clear water between them. I'm tired from playing too much Halo and I can't organize my thoughts. Maybe I will post more later when I stop playing Reach for long enough to get some rest. I'm loving this game. I share some of your opinions about the story but consider that their cliche introduction of 6 was deliberate. They set you up to think of him as a faceless killing automaton so that they could work against this expectation. I'm going to stop now (just didn't realize how tired I was until I tried to organize my thoughts) sorry.
