In Response To: A for effort? (Jillybean) I think we actually agree, I just didn't spend a heck of a lot of time explaining how well done the "atmosphere" of Reach was done. The planet feels like it's hopelessly about to fall, and that's because of that ruthless nature of The Covenant that you describe. It's the incoherence of the plot and the lack of characterization that's the deal breaker for me. : In Halo 2, the Arbiter blows us away with a brilliantly
Gah! One of the things I really disliked about H3 brought to light. Put that back, I'm trying to pay no attention to it. But while we're on the topic, one of the worst things about Halo 3 is the gross mishandling of the Prophet of Truth. He went from intriguing antagonist to bumbling bungler faster than you can say Great Journey. And yeah, yhe damsel in distress thing is a bit cliched, but hey, it gave us a sense of urgency; we needed Cortana to save the whole damned universe. It's that sense of urgency that I felt lacked in most of our actions on Reach. It might have been nice if they played up the notion that the characters truly felt that they, by stopping the cruiser for example, could potentially save the whole planet. Their failure would hold so much more weight, but instead you really only feel like they're... we'll puppets of the officers or ONI spooks who actually are trying to save the planet. : ODST then, like you say, is a personal story about a grunt. He pieces
Again, great story if it were condensed a bit more. I felt it was unnecessarily stretched out, and as a result became a little disjointed... but I was more forgiving of that because I got the sense that there were external factors forcing the game's length... : If Reach does one thing well, it shows you how useless the fight is. How Halo
Again, great atmosphere, tons of potential to weave together an interesting set of events, tension, conflict, etc. Squandered? To me it feels that way. : It's just a shame Six is far more charismatic than the Chief ever was. Enjoyably different player-characters imo. "I aim to please." But what if you miss? "I won't."
