In Response To: Hawaiian Pig's Fantabulous Story Review *SP* (Hawaiian Pig) I’ll be one of those people that doesn't know where to start as well, but I'll give it a shot. Agreeing with HP 100% on everything he has said. Talking with him for a few days on msn has really lowered my impressions of Reach. HP, myself, and many others care a lot about the story and the events that took place. It's incredibly hard to come from playing Halo for so long, feeling a part of a epic space opera, to ODST, then Reach. The moment Bungie started to have the mindset that we must be engaged with not a few, but many characters is when I started to doubt things. The Halo story is no longer about what we have come to know and love. Bungie is bringing it down to earth. Hey that’s fine, but we need solid events and a story that rivals the one you have given us for the past decade. They failed. The writing for Reach is beyond pathetic. At no point do I care about any of the characters except for Jorge. His actions and expressions make him the most "lovable" character in the game. How he handles himself with the civilians and how he sacrifices himself by doing his part to help win the fight. The scene with Noble 6 and Jorge on the cruiser is the best in the game. You feel emotion and a sense of weight. Something that has only been present in the trilogy. I do not care at all about Noble team. None of them except for Jorge. You cannot build a mindset about Spartans like they did in the books, with the MC, and then give us Noble team. A rag tag few that are standard issue and not special. Not one has an attribute that stands out above the rest; they are generic half-assed useless Spartans. It just doesn't work like that. Bungie needs to actually hire a writer. It seems like whatever in-house writer(we know who you are) that worked on these past two games can’t write for shit. We needed the deep thought and conversation where it needed to be, we needed the subtle dialogue to keep our heads up high and feeling strong, we needed the sense of weight on our shoulders, a weight that made us fight till we could no longer, the sense of weight that would inevitably defeat us. We didn't get any of that; I didn't care what happened to Reach because the story wasn't there. When I saw Cortana, the PoA, and Keyes I was ecstatic. The story finally seemed to be going somewhere and then it was just...over. The mystery, the lore, the sense of worth is non-existent in Reach. In Halo we play as the MC. A character we knew very little about. We were thrown in the middle of a situation that was confusing, yet had us intrigued. The scale and events that were about to take place across 2 more games, we could have never imagined. So here we were, learning about the character we were playing as and the story that was unfolding before us. We have only read the story about the fall of Reach. Everyone had a grandiose mindset about how much turmoil and destruction that took place there: the mysteries of the Spartan program, the training, the research, ONI. So many things going on that could be expounded upon, yet none of them were in Reach. Perhaps I might be too connected with the MC and his trials and tribulations. The rings, the Covenant journey, a religious war, the Forunners, the iconic symbols and meaning of it all... But that is Halo to me and always will be. Reach in fun, but I will leave it at that. I cannot describe it with any other detail than just a generic game with "Halo" slapped on the cover. I would have paid the price of 2 games if Bungie actually spent all the time they had to just work on SP. MP could come later as a separate addition. I would not have spent the last 7 years or so playing Halo as a whole if it weren't for the generous and amazing friends I have made since the days of H2. The countless numbers of LANS and going to PAX with friends I have made will keep me playing Reach. And a thanks to Wu for keeping the community together.
