It was a pleasant side effect. Yeah but further down he said: "And so, we see a shift away from the arcade philosophy, because fun is no longer the only consideration when designing games." That seem pretty clear cut to me. Both he and your are correct in that an arcade machine needed to grab and hold onto a customer by providing addictive gameplay and providing it quickly, but to elevate that to being designed so that fun was the only consideration is hopelessly wrong.
