I think that flow state, that sense of being in the zone, is the key element of Halo's fun. You don't get that in other games, which tend to be much more jagged with a lot of frequent deaths and respawns even in single player. And yeah, I loved ODST Firefight because of that sense of 'here you are, how far can you go?' There wasn't a target you were trying to hit or a challenge to meet or an end in sight, it was just up to you, your buddies and fate.
