In Response To: Re: On Bungie and the Value of the Player's Time (Beckx) : I don't know what to say. The last few weeks I've been in groups that formed : for the sole purpose of helping each other with challenges and we had an : absolute blast. If not for the assists & kills challenges I wouldn't : have been in multiteam so much with Kermit & Co. If not for the : campaign co-op challenge I would have been denied the chance to watch the : covenant smoke bluerunner over and over and over again. Would we still be : playing? Sure. But the challenge provided a context and a focus and I had : fun. So there you go - I'm not saying it's perfect but I'm having fun. : Real fun, too, not the illusion of fun. Or maybe I just like illusions? The "Get X kills/assists in multiplayer/firefight" feel like a grind by myself and with friends. I still have fun and enjoy the social aspect, but the task still feels like a grind. The "Beat X mission with no death/iron/thunderstorm" challenges are a lot more rewarding with friends because they require more teamwork, and it feels like something we accomplished as a group. Unfortunately, most of those involve Nightfall, and it's finished in 5 or 6 minutes. As far as playing for the enjoyment of playing, Friday night customs is the epitome of that for me. I earn hardly any credits, but I don't care. I have a great time and will continue playing late into the night, much later than I would if I were just playing for credits. It takes me back to the days of Halo CE LAN parties. No challenges, no grinding, no serious competition, just a bunch of goofballs laughing and talking and enjoying a good game. That to me is what will keep Reach in my disk tray, even when I level up through all the ranks.
