In Response To: Exactly what you said (General Battuta) : Particularly this: Challenges drive me to play the game more, but make me : enjoy it less. I hate that. I hate booting up another game and thinking : "Man, I'm missing the dailies in Reach...can I really justify : that?" : Also, Cody, would be interested to hear more on your thoughts about why the
Very little changed from a gameplay standpoint. The investment system was unveiled. Additionally, the full changes to ranked weren't understood and Arena is and never was a 100% "appropriate" replacement for the ranked system (flawed or otherwise). The problem is, on paper and in discussion, I'm sure it "felt" like an even trade with a built-in reset (seasons) mechanism to keep player investment recurring. It's only now painfully obvious that players weren't playing Halo 3 because of the new armor they could buy (weren't really many ranked-restricted perms anyway), nor because of an ever-increasing rank... They weren't really playing for their 1-50 ranks either, but the problem, in the entire shift towards a progression-only system, is somewhere in-between. Short end - folks aren't getting the same rewards or even the same reward structure in Reach. I play it because I enjoy it but resent feeling like I need to change my playstyle to hit the challenges because hey - free credits. Hell, I spent hours this weekend watching my fiancee play AC III - while mindlessly checkpoint resetting some campaign for a paltry X number of credits while I upped some commendations :P That is the more appealing way to get the commendations because they aren't tailored towards most people's playstyle (As much as I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Halo's story, I played precisely 66 "games" of campaign). I have already "played" 238 "games" of Reach's campaign - and by my own admission, most of that was to level of commendations - even the dreaded checkpoint and resume to finish a mission w/o deaths. I would dump my entire thesis on what would make an excellent investment system that still respects the player - and someone could very easily take it, modify it slightly, and probably get a job at Bungie for it. ;) Instead I'm just going public for the first time with a criticism of Reach - and I know with whom the fault lies - and I still <3 him for his work. *shrug* It's flawed, and I love it still. I just happen to know that this particular baby is ugly :P
