I think it's an interesting trend, though, that the slapdash, unpolished multiplayer - Halo 1's entire multiplayer suite and the various betas, both Reach's and Halo 3's - often seem to have a spark which the final products lack.

Maybe it's some kind of cognitive illusion, but I know that one of my biggest complaints about Halo 3's multi was that it felt somehow overpolished, as if the traction was gone and there was nothing to left to grab - whatever that's supposed to mean.

Is it possible that the asymmetries and gaps present in the Betas and H1 allowed players to generate their own gameplay rather than playing inside the developer's rules? Or am I just being a wank?
