In Response To: On Bungie and the Value of the Player's Time (Cody Miller) Excellent post! It really made me ponder the idea of player investment systems and their relative effectiveness on different types of games. It seems to me that player investment systems work better with less skill-intensive games, such as MMO's, racing games such as Forza or Gran Turismo, or the Farmville type games. I say this because when a game does not involve a great amount of skill in order to be successful, the only way to succeed and differentiate yourself from others is to spend more time playing and get better "stuff." People who enjoy more skill-intensive games such as Halo or other FPS's want to compete with others based upon their actual skill at the game, not based upon the amount of time they can devote to playing the game. It is for this reason that I think that player investment systems are better suited toward less skill-intensive games. I think that adding a successful player investment system to a FPS shooter would be much more difficult because the players have much different goals than those players of MMO's.
