Oh, I don't think he's stating that the players are all dupes. I think he's stating that developers are assuming they all are and using that at their advantage. The fact that it is working is a clear sign that people are spending more time "grinding" than "having fun" these days. And I'm sure you know at least some people that are clearly addicted to grinding-based games, even when all the fun outside the "I'm progressing!" is gone.
