| Mantle: do want? | |

Does anybody here actually want the mantle? What do you think the mantle is? Is it the white man's burden? Is it a form of charity work? Do you believe that you hold the solution to everybody else's problems? If it's a form of charity would you fight some other charity organization for the sole rights for feeding Africa? "We're going to feed Africa." "No. We're going to feed Africa!" "No you're not, that's our job and if you try to feed Africa we will destroy you!" Is the Didact being petty? If the mantle is all about helping people then can't he just muck in and help all of us help each other? Or is he a hypocrite? Is the mantle just a fig leaf to excuse telling people what to do? Deciding stuff for them? Why can't we just have some healthy competition and cooperation and trade with all the species involved? And how did the other races feel about having their shit decided for them by the Forerunners? Was it really sweetness and light? Were they slaves or pets or garden plants? Were they content to be: slaves, pets, pot plants? How did they see their relationship with the Forerunners? As I understand it the Precursors were an arrogant lot who thought they had the right to keep sentient races as pets. They treated the galaxy like a garden, tended their pet species until they got bored with that. They then meddled with the DNA of a couple of species to turn them into candidate caretakers with the intention of having one of those species take over as gardeners. So OK, the Precursors had a hobby, and a plan. That's nice, but why should we care what they wanted? Yes they meddled with our genes but so what? The Forerunners lapped it all up. They really liked the idea of having the mantle but why should humans give a fig? The Librarian seems really taken with the idea of the mantle. She likes tinkering with sentients: their genes, their personalities and minds. I suppose it's nice that she has a hobby. And we seem to be her favorite pets. Again: that's nice but what's in it for us? In particular: why should the Chief care and why should we as players care? It was cool that the Chief didn't really want her modifications for themselves. If they will help him fulfill his mission then OK otherwise not interested. But what about you? How many buttons in how many levels are you prepared to press in order to gain the mantle? Will it motivate your game play? The only motivation that I can see is a negative one. I wouldn't want Didact destroying my race or telling everybody what to do. Gaining the mantle would be a chore to perform in order to stop bad shit from happening. I would like to tell the precursors what I thought of their mantle. I'd like to tell that fragment of L what I thought of it but I doubt that that will be an option though we may get that option near the end of the story arc. But I don't really want to go through the motions for most of one or more games until we reach the point were we can decline the offer. I would rather have a motivation for the Chief that I, the player, can also want. What do you think? Is the mantle desirable? Do you want it? Like it? What do you think it actually is? How does it work?
