In Response To: Mantle: do want? (scarab) As far as I recall, the Mantle was originally only referenced in the H3 Terminals in oblique fashion. It was up to the player to imagine what the Mantle could possibly be. The way it has since been handled in H4 and Bear's novels strikes me as an oppressive 'manifest destiny', straight out of V for Vendetta. I much prefer the "Halo 1.0" version of the mythos. Left largely to the player's imagination, it seemed like the Forerunners were sympathetic and benign caretakers of the Galaxy who, after long millennia of peace, were caught unprepared by the Flood. Instead, we find the Forerunners were a stiflingly regimented society who rebelled against god-like depots and seized the Mantle, themselves becoming the oppressors, crushing any that dared to threaten their absolute reign. I don't know who these arrogant quarreling bullies are, and I don't want their version of the Mantle.
